How I Sent an Engineering Drawing to a Chinese Ceramic Supplier and Got Back a Part I Could Use

I'm an R&D engineer at a small fluid-handling equipment company in the Netherlands. We needed a Y-TZP zirconia piston sleeve with a non-standard ID of 14.3 mm, length 38 mm, Ra 0.2 µm on the ID surface, and a tolerance that wouldn't kill the cost. The 2D drawing fit on one A4 page.

I sent it to four suppliers — two Italian, one Turkish, one Chinese. Three of them came back with "we can do this" but no pricing because "we need more information." Three small lessons from this run:

1. The cost question isn't the right filter on a single custom part. The right filter is whether the supplier reads the drawing.

1. Ask for first samples on a non-critical run, not on your production batch. Most suppliers, including this one, will eat the cost of the samples if you commit to a repeat order.
