Cordierite is the unsung hero of the industrial ceramic shelf. Most spec sheets I've seen over the last ten years lead with alumina, mention zirconia for toughness, then quietly tuck cordierite at the bottom. That's a mistake in three specific applications where cordierite is genuinely the right answer.
Where cordierite wins:

| Kiln furniture (shelves, posts, setters) | Thermal expansion ~1×10⁻⁶/°C — lowest of the three. Survives 1000–1250 °C cycling. | Alumina creeps and cracks at the same cycles. | Mullite is fine but heavier and more expensive. |
| Catalyst substrates (honeycomb) | Low thermal mass, low expansion, high fired porosity. | Alumina is too dense and stores too much heat. | Mullite is harder to extrude into thin-walled honeycomb. |
| Electrical resistor / insulator bodies with thermal cycling | Good dielectric strength; stable permittivity over temperature. | Adequate but heavier. | Higher dielectric loss. |
If your part fits any of those three rows, cordierite is the answer and you should source it on purpose, not as a fallback.

For the buyer who's only ever specified alumina and zirconia: cordierite is the third shelf worth walking to, especially if your parts see thermal cycling above 800 °C on a regular basis.
