Product Description
Wear-resisting Ceramic Substrate

The first commercial ceramic substrates had a low pore density (about 200 pores per square inch), thick walls (about 12 mils or 0.012 inches or 0.3 mm), and a substrate volume about four times the engine displacement (i.e., the volume of the engine cylinder). As materials and processing techniques improved, higher pore densities, thinner walls, and higher porosities became possible.

Today, the average gasoline or hybrid vehicle in the United States typically uses two or three substrates to meet stringent US emissions standards. Outside the engine, a tightly coupled, high-pore-density substrate provides the catalyst with a large geometric surface area for initial gas conversion. Under the vehicle, a low-pore-density substrate typically contributes to the purification of final emissions.
