Thermal shock failure occurs when a material's surface and interior expand at different rates, creating stress. Cordierite's thermal expansion coefficient (roughly 1–2 × 10⁻⁶/K, far below alumina's ~8 × 10⁻⁶/K) means minimal internal stress during temperature swings. Combined with low density and good insulating properties, cordierite is the material of choice wherever heat cycles fast.
Alumina wins on hardness, wear resistance and maximum temperature. Cordierite wins on thermal cycling, weight, insulation and cost. For parts exposed to sudden quenching — or where every gram of kiln car weight costs fuel — cordierite is usually the smarter specification. Many designs combine the two: cordierite structures with alumina wear pads.
Yixing Furui'en Special Ceramics Co., Ltd. manufactures a broad range of cordierite ceramics, electrical porcelain and sensor ceramics, with ISO 9001 certification and EU pollution-free material testing. Custom shapes and volumes from prototype to mass production are welcome — get in touch.
